KARTHAUS, Pa. - Thousands of shoppers gathered their spare change and searched 100 miles of yard sales for bargains throughout Clearfield, Cameron and Elk counties.
The Quehanna Industrial Development Corporation (QIDC) kicked off its 21st annual 100 Mile Yard Sale Friday.
The sales began on Route 879 from Shawville through LeContes Mills, Frenchville, Keewaydin Pine Glen, Karthaus, Sinnemahoning, Driftwood, Benezette and Medix Run.
"Many people who attend the sale actually purchase camps and land here because they see how beautiful this area is," said Josiah Jones, Director of the Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority. "It also helps the local businesses, fire companies and many other people in the area not only get noticed, but to also generate some revenue."
Jones said this year's event is in memory of the man who started it all, Raymond Savel.
Savel was the president of the QIDC.
Jones said Savel created the 100 Mile Yard Sale and other events to help bring jobs and industry to the area.
After Savel passed, the Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority stepped up to help the QIDC put on this year's sale.
Jones said shoppers from as far as California and Florida came.
Dawn Ungerer, a shopper from Cleveland, OH, said she learned about the 100 Mile Yard Sale on Facebook.
"My van is half full of a lot of vintage items, that's what I mainly buy is vintage," Ungerer said. "I've got a ton of blow molds in there and old Barbie dolls."
In order to sell things, Jones said vendors must purchase a participation poster. All the money raised from the posters goes back to the QIDC for next year's sale and other events.
The 100 Mile Yard Sale continues Saturday.
