Altoona man confessed to fatally stabbing mother after leap from parking garage: Police

UPDATE #4:

Police say an Altoona man fatally stabbed his mother in the neck during an argument.

Altoona police provided new details Thursday surrounding the murder of 61-year-old Maureen Mazenko.

Police say they were called to the 200 block of E. Maple Avenue where they found Mazenko dead in the living room of the residence.

Police say Joshua Leyo lived there with his mother.

They say they learned Leyo was seen at the UPMC Altoona Hospital Emergency Room Tuesday morning and was treated for a hand laceration.

They say Leyo had since left the hospital but was tracked to the area of the Pittsburgh International Airport.

According to investigators, Leyo used his mother’s bank account and had taken an UBER from Altoona where he made additional purchases in the Pittsburgh area.

Altoona police say they reached out to the Department of Homeland Security and Allegheny County Police Department who told them Leyo was in custody after jumping from the second floor of a parking garage at the airport.

Altoona police say they interviewed Leyo at Allegheny General Hospital where they say he confessed to stabbing his mother after an argument.

They say Leyo is currently awaiting release from Allegheny General Hospital to be extradited back to Blair County and arraigned on charges of First-Degree Murder.

UPDATE #3:

Allegheny County Police have arrested the suspect in Wednesday's Blair County homicide.

Police arrested 30-year-old Joshua Leyo, of Altoona, Wednesday morning after he allegedly jumped from the second floor at Pittsburgh International Airport.

First responders initially could not locate Leyo, but he was found a short time later with serious injuries in a stairwell at an airport parking garage.

A spokesman for Allegheny County Police said Leyo is currently being treated at a Pittsburgh hospital and will be extradited to Blair County when he is released.

According to an online court docket, Leyo is facing charges for felony murder and aggravated assault.

UPDATE #2:

Blair County Coroner Ray Benton has identified the homicide victim as 61-year-old Maureen Mazenko.

Benton said in a release that Mazenko died from wounds that appeared to have been inflicted by another person during an earlier incident.

He said an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.

According to Altoona police, Wednesday's incident on E. Maple avenue has now been ruled a homicide.

Police say they have a suspect in custody and that the investigation is ongoing. They tell 6News more details will be released at a later time.

Police in Blair County say officers are investigating a "suspicious" death in Altoona.

Authorities say they were dispatched to the area of East Maple Avenue, near the Fairview Hills Apartment Complex, just before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

No further details have been provided at this time, however, our crew says that the coroner and the DA have been called to the scene.
