WESTMORELAND CO, Pa (WJAC) — State police in Greensburg say a 66-year-old man has died following an apartment fire in Hempfield Township last Sunday, according to a news release.
Troopers say the fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Humphrey Apartments, located at 512 Humphrey Road, in Westmoreland County.
The state police fire marshal determined that the fire originated in the victim's first-floor apartment, but the cause of the fire is still unknown, the release adds.
Authorities say the victim, identified as Michael Joseph Serafin, had to be rescued from the blaze and was then transported by helicopter to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
State police add that Serafin was in critical condition at the time, and that he later succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, May 26.
The fire marshal noted that the fire was contained to Serafin's apartment but that the rest of the building suffered heavy smoke damage.
Investigators also add that the building's other residents were all evacuated and are all being lodged at nearby hotels.
