Local group honors veterans by putting up banners in Blair County

The Tyrone Improvement Group was started in 2021 by local business owners and residents; on Saturday, they put up veterans’ banners throughout downtown to recognize those veterans from the area.

The co-president of the group, Brian Igou, said that their volunteer numbers have continued to go up each year.

Igou said, “We wanted to bring some liveliness to the downtown district; we’ve lost a lot of businesses out of here and so we wanted to do something to help spruce up the downtown, and this was one of our ideas with the veteran banners.”

Igou said many of the banners are sponsored by family members or other community members.

“It might have been their neighbor, their grandfather, their great-grandfather; and the history behind it is, we always say, that every banner tells a story and, whether you know that story or not, it’s something to behold.”

He said they started with just 120 banners four years ago, and that, right now, there are around 200 hanging throughout downtown.

He added, “We still have another 100 we’re waiting for, some of the newer ones to come in, and once they come in, we’ll be putting them up and they’ll be up from Memorial Day until Veterans Day.”

Igou said that next week the group will be replacing the flowerpots that go underneath the banners. He also said they are looking forward to their annual food truck festival on June 1, which they also started four years ago.
