Destiny Outreach program protests decision at Johnstown City Council meeting

A protest was staged Wednesday evening at a regularly scheduled Johnstown City Council meeting. Representatives from Jefferson Memorial Church showed up to the meeting in order to protest against a decision made by the city to deny them funds from the 30.5 million federal ARPA, or the American Rescue Plan Act. The Jefferson Memorial Church and their Destiny Outreach program which provides meals for local children was one of 22 applications that was denied by the city. [Read More]

Former DuBois mayor accused of stealing snacks, drinks from Sheetz: Police

DUBOIS, Pa. (WJAC) — A former local mayor is facing theft charges. Former DuBois mayor Randy Schmidt resigned in August. Officials said he retired to spend time with family, but according to police, Schmidt is being charged with retail theft. According to a criminal complaint, Schmidt stole from the Sheetz on North Brady Street in DuBois. The complaint alleges that the thefts occurred on 17 different dates ranging from March to August. New PA Safe Access office helps patients receive medical marijuana

HUNTINGDON – A new office in Huntingdon County is helping people take the proper steps to receive medical marijuana. It comes after Gov. Tom Wolf signed the “Medical Marijuana Act" into law early last year. It's been a long time coming but the Pennsylvania Safe Access office is open and can now help patients register with the department of health to potentially receive medical marijuana. Pirates team president tests positive for COVID-19

Pittsburgh, Pa (WJAC) — The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Thursday that team president, Travis Williams, has tested positive for COVID-19. According to a news release on the team's website, Williams began displaying symptoms on Monday and is now “on the road to recovery.” “Fortunately," Williams said, "I followed the critical health and safety protocols that we have put in place, including wearing a mask as required, maintaining safe social distance and, upon the onset of symptoms, immediately isolating myself and getting tested, which has prevented further impact to others. Altoona man sentenced for selling heroin to man who suffered fatal overdose

HOLLIDAYSBURG – A Blair County man was sentenced Thursday to 6 to 12 years in prison for selling heroin to a man who died from an overdose in 2015. A jury in February convicted Zachary Moore, 24, of possession with intent to deliver, criminal use of a communication facility and simple possession. Moore was also convicted of selling $75 worth of heroin to 22-year-old Jacob Willis, of Altoona, who died hours later of an overdose. [Read More]

Family of geese 'intentionally' run over and killed in York Co., wildlife center says

YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A local wildlife center is asking the public for help after multiple geese were recently run over and killed in York County. According to the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, someone eating dinner at The First Post on East Market Street looked outside and saw a vehicle run over a family of geese. In a Facebook post, the wildlife center said the vehicle killed seven Canadian geese — two adults and five goslings. [Read More]

Forest Hills School District reveals new mascot

The St. Michael Labor Day Festival wasn’t the only attraction that brought people to St. Michael on Saturday. JOHNSTOWN, Pa -- A federal judge is deciding whether a former Central City priest convicted of having sexual relations with children during missionary trips should be granted a new trial. Father Joseph Maurizio was found guilty on five of eight counts of abuse, a count of international money laundering, a count of possessing a photo that exploited a child and three counts of illicting sexual conduct with three separate victims.
