Former Penn State womens hoops coach Rene Portland dies at 65

Rene Portland, who built Penn State into a women’s basketball powerhouse during a 27-year tenure, has died after a three-year fight with cancer. She was 65. D’Anjolell Memorial Home of Broomall in Pennsylvania confirmed her death Sunday. Portland coached the Lady Lions’ first All-Americans, achieved their first No. 1 ranking and reached their first Final Four. Operation April Showers nets 9 accused dealers in Bedford County drug bust

BEDFORD – Arrest warrants were served Tuesday on nine accused drug dealers during an early-morning raid in Bedford County. The Bedford County Drug Task Force, as well as the Pennsylvania State Police, conducted the raid beginning at 7 a.m. The defendants were arraigned throughout the morning at the office of Magisterial District Judge Kathy Calhoun. “Operation April Showers” culminated a 12-month drug task force investigation into local drug-trafficking operations that began at the conclusion of “Operation Shamrock Shackles” in March 2016, during which 21 suspected drug dealers were apprehended. PA fire company disbands after racial slur allegations

DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — A volunteer fire company in Pennsylvania has disbanded months after it was suspended when another fire company allegedly heard members using racial slurs and disparaging Black residents in a virtual meeting. In a letter to Darby Township commissioners Wednesday, the Briarcliffe Fire Company announced it was shutting down. “The Briarcliffe Fire Company strongly denies that anyone in the township was ever treated differently or discriminated against based upon their race,” the company’s lawyer Robert Ewing wrote in the letter. Penn State hosts pep rally for fans attending Peach Bowl

On Friday, Penn State hosted a pep rally for all fans and alumni in Atlanta for Saturday’s Peach Bowl. The event was free to hundreds of Nittany Lions supporters. The band, cheerleaders, and dancers also performed for the crowd. Humane Society of Cambria County halts owner surrenders and walk-in visits

The Humane Society of Cambria County has taken in over one thousand animals in the past year alone, according to officials. They say 78 animals were recently accepted over just a two-day period in May. “Every room in this building is full to the brim with animals that we can safely occupy. Humane Society of Somerset County rescues dozens of dogs from high kill shelter

PA Department of Agriculture seeks public help in spotted lanternfly crisis

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the spotted lanternfly is a planthopper that’s native to east Asia. It was first discovered in PA in Berks County in 2014. Since then, it’s wreaked havoc on the local environment as well as the economy. An economic impact study conducted by the state in 2019 estimated that, uncontrolled, the spotted lanternfly could have cost the state $324 million annually and impacted thousands of jobs. Services begin at UPMC Ebensburg facility

EBENSBURG, Pa. - The UPMC outpatient center in Ebensburg has opened. The facility project was announced in January of 2017 and brings both UPMC family practice and specialty care physicians and outpatient testing and therapy services to Cambria County. Cambria Township engineer Jack Schaffer said he signed off on the final inspection Tuesday, and the facility opened Wednesday. He said some general maintenance, like cleaning up debris, filling cracks in pavement and street-sweeping, needs to be completed. [Read More]
